While I am aware some players here already know this, I thought I would toss out a tip aimed at increasing the amount of fun that can be had playing this simulation/imitation dinosaur of a game. So, in case didn't know or remember: Sorcerers have 3 of the 6 strongest offensive spells in the game. (offensive spells are absolutely necessary for running deep) {a very wise man once said: if you are pressing f a lot, you are doing it wrong} They are: Burning Air -- Freezing Air -- Lightning Field (the other 3 are Word of Death/wiz + healer -- Precognitive Death/mage only -- Spectral Blast/item only) So depending on the encounter a sorc has a 50% chance of having the best spell to use while a mage and wiz/healer (not to discount their individual classes spell strengths) have a 16.6% chance of having the one needed. Most of the toughest opponents down deep are going to require a combination of these spells (and fighting usually) to clear the encounter. Take notes if you need to and soon you will know which combinations of actions are most likely to increase your odds of survival vs. the worst the DM's can throw at us. Hope this helps someone!

All true and well stated. And to some, the joy of seeing the field swept aside with one blast is a thrilling moment. Hence, they become a master speller.
To others, there is excitement in watching a sniper carefully pick apart the opponents. This type of player uses a warrior, paladin, seeker, etc. as the prime force and includes that master speller for the ultimate fight.
Those ultimate fights do not occur much on the way down the dungeon, but as the base note states it is usually only "running deep" that one encounters the true need for a sniper supplement. Since the vast majority of our time is spent working our way down, this one thinks we might as well enjoy the scenery on the way down instead of creating a burnt earth.
Kind of like looking through a powerful scope to fight Vs seeing the mushroom cloud of an atomic attack. IMHO

Well, like the boy scout who fixed my neighbors Volkswagen horn said: "Beep Repaired!"
